September 28th, at 5:00pm, our Archbishop, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan conducted a special Vespers Service in the Lady Chapel of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. During the service, our own Father Ivan Lovric, along with several other international priests, was incardinated (inducted) as a priest of the Archdiocese of New York. At the Cardinal’s wish, the guest list of those attending was kept small. Along with a few of father’s friends, Monsignor Nevin, Deacon Jim and several other priests were also present for the service.
As many of you may know, Fr. Ivan was here in New York when he ministered at the parish of Annunciation, Crestwood, for a little over seven years. It was during this time that father earned his doctorate at Fordham University and became a U.S. citizen. Five years ago, when father’s bishop gave him permission to return to New York and exercise his priestly ministry here, we were fortunate enough to have him come to Saint Aedan’s.
What is the meaning of incardination? Every priest or deacon must have an ordinary (bishop). Incardination ensures that no one is “freelance”, without a clear ecclesiastical superior to whom the cleric is accountable and who, in turn, is accountable for the cleric.
Incardination in one diocese does not cease until the moment when that cleric, promising obedience and respect, is incardinated as a subject another bishop. An excardination from one diocese, does not become effective until the moment of incardination to another in order that there is no gap during which the cleric is not clearly answerable to a definitely determined bishop.
The bottom line is that father’s incardination means that his bishop, in Serajevo, Croatia, officially granted permission for father to transfer from his diocese over to the Archdiocese of New York. Cardinal Dolan is now Father’s proper ordinary (bishop) and father’s status is that of an Archdiocesan priest. Fr. Ivan will also be considered a part of whatever Archdiocesan class he would have belonged to if his ordination had taken place here in NY.
We are presently working on a date for Father Ivan to celebrate a 12 PM Sunday Mass of Thanksgiving followed by a reception in the parish gym so that parishioners may congratulate father personally.
Congratulations Father Ivan. God bless you in your continuing priestly ministry to the people of our parish and the great Archdiocese of New York. Ad Multos Annos.
